Overview
Using discretion and independent judgment, to assist the GM/VP in the daily operation of import, export, and scrap disposal operations. Supervises all outbound Transportation employees and adjusts staffing and equipment to ensure that the department works as effectively and safely as possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety - Meet all safety protocols and directions including, but not limited to the following:
- Complete scheduled OSHA and Company safety meetings and training.
- Participate in Safety Inspections.
- Ensure all workers have and wear proper Protective Equipment.
- Ensure all equipment is operating within company and regulatory safety requirements.
- Respond to and investigate all accidents and injuries promptly, including completing accident reports and root-cause investigations.
- Ensures DOT Inspection Logs are Completed Daily
- Conducts Road Tests with potential driver candidates. If the Supervisor doesn’t have a CDL the test should be conducted on-site. It can include simple maneuvers such as pre-trip inspection, brake test, backing, and parallel parking to assess the candidate's skill set.
- Conducts occasional ride-along with employees.
- Conducts site visits of customers' locations where there are identified route hazards and provides closed-loop solutions for such hazards.
Supervision
- Evaluate staffing to ensure adequate levels are maintained and participate in every stage of the interview process including face-to-face interviews of all candidates.
- Trains and Coaches route teams to ensure knowledge of systems which include handheld devices, receipts, and manifests completion.
- Ensure accurate tracking of employee and temporary worker attendance.
- Review attendance daily reports, submit missing times, reconcile missed punches, and process disciplinary action.
- Ensures that all Transportation employees follow state and federal wage and hour laws, safety regulations, and any special licensing requirements.
- Oversee daily hours reports, violations, data issues, safety issues, and defective equipment. Submit repair orders to correct tractor issues that are reported.
- Review and respond to HOS log violations, pre-trip/post-trip records, and XRS safety information.
- Ensure break and meal periods are compliant.
- Administering productivity and quality tracking procedures
- Assist management in overseeing operational hours to ensure operational efficiency and performance expectations.
- Supervises, schedules work assignments, reviews daily performance and disciplines assigned employees, and has input into hiring and terminating.
Operations
- Prepare corrective action and coaching as deemed necessary.
- Maintain daily and continuous contact with drivers directing workflow to include missed stores, add tires/stores to routes if capacity permits, and manage efficiency, tablet issues, manifests, and hours of service logs.
- Review the previous day’s Route Metrics Report.
- Responds to calls for mechanical breakdowns pertaining to company equipment.
- Ensure all new hire checklists and training are completed to include temporary employees.
- Monitors and adheres to all Union regulations and Union CBA requirements.
- Ensures all daily equipment inspection checks are completed.
- Manages 3PL’s when necessary.
- Review and approve all 3PL invoices associated with import/export operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency in communicating safety concerns and maintaining positive, timely communication with drivers, helpers, Human Resources, freight forwarders, customers, and upper management.
- Provide updates on business impacts, daily route details, staffing matters, and union-related issues to the direct manager, Leadership team, and HR.
- Respond to transportation admin requests for missing documents or data.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced professional environment.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Works comfortably under pressure and meets tight deadlines.
- Must be self-motivated, have attention to detail, and have excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, act independently, and seek innovative and creative solutions.
Education/Work Experience:
- A high school diploma or general education (GED) equivalent.
- A minimum of 2 years of previous experience in transportation, routing, DOT maintenance understanding
- Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations, California Commercial Vehicle regulations, and Logistics software.
- Driver/fleet management skills preferred.
- Knowledge of import/export operations including drayage and booking coordination.
- Experience in managing bookings and customs processes, focusing on efficiency strategies, reviewing route metrics, and optimizing operations to reduce costs and improve output.
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Ability to communicate fluently in two languages, Spanish and English is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires manual dexterity and hearing/visual acuity sufficient to effectively perform the duties inherent to the position.
- Sedentary with intermittent walking and standing and occasional squatting, kneeling, climbing, and/or bending.
- Occasional light to medium lifting and carrying (from one to 25 pounds).
Salary Offered:
$95-$105k annual salary with a bonus plan.
